We will start this year working on reviewing some of the materials covered in 6th grade social studies.
The text is from the publisher TCI and called The Ancient and Medieval Worlds. I will provide more information about website and login after school starts.
Primarily, we will study the 7th grade social studies concepts by using the inquiry model. The inquiry model involves the students looking at a small piece of data, usually a primary source, to explore concepts and history of a group or people. We will then work within small groups and utilize whole class discussions. There will be more classwork, and less of the traditional 'homework' for social studies this year.
We will then work through Early Human History and the Rise of Civilizations in the first quarter, and getting into a study of Ancient Egypt near the end of the quarter.
We will then shift our attention to a survey of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and their individual and combined effects on the continued development of civilization. At the end of the second quarter, we will briefly discuss Ancient Greece and Roman aspects of government, empire building, and the concepts of their legacy and achievements.
For the second semester, the majority of out time will be spent on looking at the areas of Ghana, India and China. We will continue to use inquiry to examine aspects of trade, religion, culture, empire building and more. Near the end of the the fourth quarter, we will turn our focus on the aspects of culture, economics, trade, religion and the achievements of the Aztec, Inca, and Maya peoples.
While we are looking at these materials from your text, we will be looking at current events through the news program called CNN10 and a few others. This program is a daily news program that focuses on current events happening in our world explained in 'kid friendly' terms.
When you watch a video for this class, be sure you are doing a video analysis paper. Also, when watching a CNN 10, you should be keeping track of the materials covered in that day's video on a record-keeping paper. All the materials you need are in your Schoology class - look in each chapter/folder for the forms your need.
